Postcards from Mars: Spiders on south pole

This is a region close to the south pole of Mars. The spidery features are created when CO2 gas escapes the surface in springtime. The image was captured in March by the MRO probe which has been orbiting Mars since 2006.

The features were named spiders (scientifically they are called Araneiforms), but they do not come from any life forms. They are a result of the CO2 cycle on Mars, which freezes during winter, and sublimates back to the atmosphere in spring.
