Researches published a new study explaining mysterious oxygen spike millions of years before it became a permanent part of our Earths atmosphere.

- There was an unexplained spike of oxygen 100 millions years before its permanent presence in Earths atmosphere 2,4 billions years ago.
- New research shows corresponding mercury abundances shortly before the oxygen spike. It came from a volcanic activity which released nutrients that fed bacteria in water
- Bacteria thrived and released large amounts of oxygen into the atmosphere
